This study explores the nature and challenges, from a sociocultural perspective, of in-service Latina ESL teachers' learning to teach ESL in U.S. Midwestern difficult urban schools. The current study illuminates how experienced in-service teachers conceptualize ESL teaching in urban schools in a postindustrial area, and what challenges they have in ESL teaching. Although a large proportion of English Language Learners (ELL) is in California, New York and Texas, this study focuses on the Midwestern region which is one of the fastest growing ELL communities in U.S. (Migrant Policy Institute, 2010). (Abstract shortened by ProQuest.).
