International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) have become a valuable asset to undergraduate education in the United States. However, miscommunication between ITAs and undergraduate students is commonplace, and it is well documented that undergraduate students often hold negative attitudes towards ITAs, most notably due to issues related to language. Because miscommunication between ITAs and undergraduate students has traditionally been conceptualized as a linguistic problem, most studies which address this problem have done so by investigating the various linguistic weaknesses of ITAs, and then suggesting modifications to ITA training programs. However, other studies have provided strong evidence that undergraduate student perceptions of an ITA's race and ethnicity may also be underlying factors in communication breakdown. In the attempt to apply this knowledge, researchers have proposed and tested various programs for facilitating increased contact between ITAs and undergraduate students, or for sensitizing undergraduate students to language differences. Unfortunately, these programs have tended to exhibit mixed, if not negative results. Therefore, it is the goal of this study to provide a new approach for reducing discrimination against ITAs and improving communication between ITAs and undergraduate students.

To accomplish this, I first interviewed two ITAs on their experiences with communication breakdown in the classroom for an in-depth look at how race may function in instances of linguistic discrimination. I then interviewed four undergraduate students on their attitudes towards ITAs and how these attitudes changed in response to taking a course called The Sociopolitics of Language. I also interviewed the two instructors of this same course for their insights on both students' attitudes towards language difference and the instructional approaches they used in the course to facilitate critical discussion of issues related to language and how language functions in society. Drawing on past research findings and the information provided to me in the interviews I conducted, I propose a program for reducing discrimination against ITAs. I also outline and describe specific instructional guidelines to be used in this program in order to help students critically engage with program material and avoid the problems exhibited in previously-tested programs. I also address associated logistical and budgetary concerns.
