This study identifies two traditions in the history of modern craft. One of the traditions, the English Arts and Crafts Movement, is associated with the modern craft movement in much of craft history and criticism. The Arts and Crafts Movement is often cited as a source for the modern craft movement, and its ideas and values are often used to describe the objects and activity of craft. Arts and crafts ideas such as anti-industrialism, utopian escape, and ennobled work have become romantically linked to the modern craft movement.

A second tradition evolved on the European continent concurrently with the Arts and Crafts Movement. This tradition called upon avant-garde artists to unite art, craft, and industry. The result led to a reconceptualization of craft and its role in the modern world. This second tradition shares some ideas with the Arts and Crafts Movement. For example, both advocated the power of art to improve society, and both sought to unite art with craft.

These two traditions are further defined by a case study comparison of two metalsmithing craftsmen who both taught at Cranbrook Academy of Art. One of the metalsmiths, Arthur Nevill Kirk, represents the Arts and Crafts tradition. Kirk was trained as a silversmith at Central School of Art and Design in London. The other metalsmith, Richard Thomas, represents the ideas of the European tradition. Thomas received a painting degree at Cranbrook before he became Head of Metalsmithing.

This study claims that the arts and crafts tradition limits our understanding and appreciation of craft in the modern world, and suggests that craft education should be modelled after the activity of contemporary craftsmen.
