The purpose of this exploratory, qualitative multiple case study was to examine retention practices of bank managers of minority-owned banks and other financial institutions. Twelve managers of financial institutions in Virginia and North Carolina were surveyed using a questionnaire of closed and open-ended questions to gauge their retention practices with minority workers. Also, one follow-up interview took place with one of the respondents. Public data from larger, traditional financial institutions, including banks, centered on recruitment and retention practices were also collected. Data from both the questionnaires and interview were analyzed using Qualtrics and NVivo. Themes identified for the first research question regarding hiring and retention processes were; areas of growth and learning and attract minority workers. Themes identified for the second research question regarding past managerial experiences of retention and turnover were; promoting retention, and firm's past plans to keep minorities. Themes for the third research question regarding current retention were; training for minority workers, and firm's future plans for minority workers. The theme for the fourth research question regarding larger, traditional banks' efforts in regard to hiring and retaining minority workers was diversity information. Findings from the research questions indicate study participants believed their firms have success retaining minority workers. Implications include managers having a viewpoint that their companies have suitable retention programs for minority workers, although the study's purpose explored retention efforts pertaining to minority workers due to problems that existed with the companies. As a result, recommendations are for banks and other financial institutions to continue their current retention efforts for minority workers, and also study and develop additional procedures and practices for the future. Areas for future research were provided, including investigating further what changes managers would like to see with their organizations in the future involving retention of minority workers.
