Thesis (M.A.)
Includes bibliographical references
The aim of this thesis is to examine the patterns that arise as a result of a partial reduplication process in Turkish. This forms intensified adjectives and adverbs with the typical linking consonants m, p, r, and s, as in bem.beyaz, ka p.kara, ter.temiz, and bus.butun. This study examines the findings and analyses adopted in previous research, and it goes beyond earlier works by investigating the responses of native speakers of Turkish to intensifying nonce words without limiting them in terms of the choice of linking consonants. The results suggest that the choice of linking consonants in Turkish partial reduplication is lexically determined in existing Turkish adjectives/adverbs. With nonce words, native Turkish speakers appear to adopt secondary strategies such as dissimilation of the linking consonant and the initial consonant of a C-initial base, copying a consonant from the base and using it as a linking consonant, and omitting a linking consonant.
