In a criminal investigation, the United States requires police officers to prepare a complaint against the arrested suspect. The validity of a witness statement obtained during criminal procedures plays a vital role in the complaint, and essentially for the person being indicted. Various approaches are used by law enforcement to analyze theses statements such as: Investigative Discourse Analysis, Statement Analysis, Scientific Content Analysis and Verbal Behavior Analysis. However to date, information regarding behavioral cues to deception has been largely obtained from laboratory-based experiments, and deals with psychological perspectives as to how liars typically behave while lying. Scholarship has yet to identify a single cue, or a set of cues, that is consistently identified with deception. The primary goal of this study was to extend these ideas further by addressing the ways linguistic markers of stance better explain attributes commonly associated with veracity versus deception. Stance realized as a linguistically articulated form of social action ultimately conveys meaning through: the scope of language, interaction, and sociocultural value. Given the complications in standardizing elements of deception detection this review suggests the analytical discourse system, Appraisal Analysis, will help to narrow and define deceptive attributes. Overall results showed that participants were almost three times as likely to convey emotions of in /security in truthful accounts than in deceptive ones. These findings imply that the participants were feeling more confident, committed, and/or comfortable when being truthful than when they were asked to lie. Consistent with similar research, participants used a greater amount of graduated elements in their truthful accounts than in their deceptive ones (54% vs. 46%). Regarding the down scaling functions of Appraisal, the statements analyzed exhibited similar patterns of contradiction that allowed for interesting insight. Additionally, frequent shifting of self-incriminating focus onto a number of external sources, were construed as ultimately warrantable or as undeniable factors indicating deception.
