This dissertation examines the adaptation of French loanwords into Urban Wolof focusing on loanword phonology. The Wolof language and the French language have been in contact for centuries because of the lengthy French colonial presence in Senegal. This contact situation has led to extensive borrowings of French words into Urban Wolof, which is the non-standard variety of Wolof spoken in major cities of Senegal. This work discusses and analyzes the phonological aspect of loanwords in terms of structural modifications that allow loanwords to comply with the phonology of the recipient language. The loanword data indicate that segments and sequences that are not part of Wolof inventory are substituted with native segments or modified in a way consistent with the templates of permissible structures in the recipient language. In general, the borrowing process does not affect the phones present in the inventory of both languages. Modification strategies that accommodate the source words include epenthesis, lengthening, voicing neutralization, coalescence and gemination. Loanword structure illustrates strict compliance to Wolof phonotactics such as constraints on syllable well-formedness and segmental configuration. Considering the nativization of words into Urban Wolof and models of loanword phonology, it is demonstrated that Wolof phonology significantly contributes to the phonetic shape of borrowed words.
