The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of the solution-focused family support model with high school students experiencing behavioral problems and academic failure. Interventions with students that are experiencing behavioral problems and academic failure are understood as a standard responsibility of the school counselor. This study involved the student and his or her parent(s) and/or guardian(s) in interventions implemented by the school counselor. This study included a paradigm shift in school counseling, from the individual to the family system. Participants attended a high school in North Texas. This study included a pilot study and a quasi-experimental design. The effects of two treatments with high school students experiencing behavioral problems and academic failure were examined. For the purposes of this study, participants received solution-focused family support or individual solution-focused brief counseling. The findings support the null hypothesis that the effect of the solution-focused family support model would not be significant. However, minute changes in behavioral problems and academic failure were found. Further research that allows for a longer treatment period is needed to test the longevity of the solution-focused family support model as a treatment method in schools.
