Plagiarism committed by university students in the digital age is a growing problem and universities have developed strategies to uncover and prevent plagiarism, including the use of plagiarism detection services. These services, such as Turnitin.com and SafeAssign, have evolved over the past 20 years and increasingly more colleges and universities now use them. The effectiveness of plagiarism detection services in the deterrence of student plagiarism has been the focus of numerous recent studies; however, relatively few studies have explored the effect of plagiarism detection services on relationships between students, teachers and nonteaching university administrators.

Specific areas of the study's exploration included the effect of university faculty use of Turnitin.com on the frequency of non-traditional, graduate student plagiarism violations, awareness of, and behavior toward, plagiarism, level of trust toward non-teaching university administrators and level of trust toward university faculty when compared with university faculty who do not use Turnitin.com.

Findings from the study suggest the use of Turnitin.com by university faculty significantly reduces the overall frequency of plagiarism violations by committed by non-traditional graduate students. The study produced no other significant findings related to faculty use of Turnitin.com and its effect on student awareness, behavior and trust with faculty and nonteaching University administrators.

These findings could benefit universities and instructors currently using, or considering the use of Turnitin.com, by describing how the use of Turnitin.com by faculty can potentially decrease the frequency of plagiarism violations among non-traditional, graduate students. In addition, the study describes current, non-traditional graduate students' awareness of, and behavior toward, plagiarism.
