Beethoven's Op. 16 exists in two versions. The original version is a quintet for piano and winds, composed circa 1797. The date of the transcription, a quartet for piano and strings, was sometime between the date of composition and the simultaneous publication of both versions in 1801. The same piano part is used for both versions. The transcription of the other parts, four wind parts transferred to three string parts, was regarded by many scholars as involving little significant change and therefore not worthy of study. Beethoven's changes, however, necessitate an entirely different approach on the part of the pianist in dealing with the two versions. The necessary adjustments for this work's respective versions have been extensively discussed in great detail and an attempt has been made through that discussion to lay down certain basic principles which might be applied by pianists in the performance of wind and string chamber music in general.
