The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of a heterogeneously composed, open, ongoing, solution-oriented counseling group. The subject pool consisted of 40 participants, over age 18, who were seeking services at an urban community mental health center and agreed to participate in this study. Participants presented with a wide range of clinical diagnoses.

Treatment was provided based on strategies outlined in the investigator's previous work entitled "Infusing Solution-Oriented Theory and Techniques into Group Counseling" (Coe & Zimpfer, 1996). Solution-focused group techniques, which capitalized on the unique qualities inherent in group counseling and the strengths of the participants, were employed to promote rapid progress toward goals defined by the participants.

Two instruments were used to measure the effects of the therapeutic intervention: the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and the Goal Attainment Scale (GAS). Scores from each participant were obtained before treatment, after treatment, and after ninety days at a follow-up. Analysis of the data provided evidence supporting the hypotheses that participants attending an open, on-going solution-oriented counseling group would show a reduction of psychiatric symptoms and that they would make significant progress towards their goals. The results also showed evidence that treatment gains were not increased by longer stays in treatment and that treatment gains were maintained over time.

Implications of these findings were discussed with an emphasis on the provision of group counseling in today's managed care environment. Goal Attainment Scaling proved to be a valuable resource in this study. Its ability to be tailored to the individual needs of participants was appropriate considering the heterogeneous population. The process of developing the GAS with each participant using solution-focused presuppositional and scaling questions aided in the identification of goals, solutions and a problem-free vision of the future. The GAS also helped to focus the sessions and assist participants in monitoring their progress. Limitations and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
