This study focuses on the recent work by performance artist Marina Abramovic (b. 1946), specifically The Artist is Present (2010) where she impassively sat across from individual viewers during her three month long retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The viewer's participation completes the art and illustrates the philosophy of early twentieth-century Dada artist Marcel Duchamp (1887--1968). Duchamp's iconic "readymade" objects stressed the importance of communicating ideas between artist and audience by eliminating traditional aesthetic elements of artwork. The Artist is Present eliminated any physical barrier (art object) between the artist and viewer, leaving only an experience that expands upon the viewer's conceptual. This study examines the century-long journey through Dada, conceptual art, performance art, and Marina Abramovic's contemporary work with a focus on the development of the viewer's changing role from passive spectator to active participant.
