Universities conduct thousands of transactions every month internally and externally. They currently use multiple financial systems built on antiquated infrastructure. Distributed ledger technology is a nascent technology that promises to bring noteworthy efficiencies and risk controls to the business units of higher education. Sorting through a wide array of use cases and their associated impacts will be problematic. This qualitative instrumental case study provides a platform of informed professional experiences on which executive-level administrators can build strategic decisions for their respective institutions. By exploring the perceptions of financial professionals with a fiduciary responsibility in higher education, this research begins mapping the unlandscaped terrain of organizational issues pertaining to distributed ledger use on university campuses. Oriented to financial units, the study revealed the current level of understanding of the technology by these professionals, factors influencing adoption, ramifications of passive use, issues surrounding active adoption, and ideas to promote institutionalization. In conclusion, it is recommended that executive-level university administrators facilitate employee understanding of distributed ledger technology. Furthermore they should proactively initiate adoption discussions in spaces where the IHE's motivations differ from their financial partners.
