College student athletes competing in Division 1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) may not always comply with NCAA standards, due to limited financial resources that impact compliance. What it is like to be a student-athlete challenged with limited financial resources and the meaning of those related experiences remained unexplored in research literature. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand what it is like to be a NCAA Division I college athlete with limited financial resources. The sample that led to qualitative data saturation included 18 participants who were NCAA Division I college athletes. The data received from semi-structured interviews of former student athletes underwent analysis that led to the identification of six major themes, grouped into three categories. The first category pertained to status as a NCAA student-athlete. The second category pertained to the nature of NCAA Division 1 athletics. The third category encompassed the former student athletes' experiences with finances. The thematic findings from the data collected for this study led to recommendations for leaders and suggestions for future research. Future qualitative, quantitative, cross-sectional, and longitudinal studies could add to the findings of this study.
