Purpose and Method of Study.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a correlation existed between personality temperaments of high school band students and the band instruments they selected to play. This study employed a quantitative, correlational, non-experimental design. The Keirsey Temperament Sorter-II assessment was administered to ninth through twelfth grade students from Oklahoma high school band programs. The Spearman rho (rho) correlation was used in the study. Correlations were computed to examine the relationship between personality temperaments of high school band students and the band instruments they chose to play. Personality temperaments were categorized as Artisan, Guardian, Rational, and Idealist.

Findings and Conclusions.

Spearman's correlation coefficient indicated the association between the two variables of instrument and personality as -0.084 (rho = -0.084 or rs = -0.084). There was no significant relationship between personality temperaments of high school band students and the specific band instruments they chose to play. The findings indicated that the combined sample of band students are more likely to be Guardian or Idealist rather than Artisan or Rational. However, the sample temperaments of high school instrumentalists in this study did not correspond with the temperaments of the general population.
