Includes bibliographical references
This project focuses on the exchange of art objects between Asia and Western Europe during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Each chapter is focused on the work of a different painter and examines how each incorporated foreign elements into their paintings. The works of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, James McNeill Whistler, Vincent van Gogh, and Shigeru Aoki each reveal the different ways in which the past, history, the foreign, and notions of Otherness are reliant on the possession and collection of material objects, and therefore how History painting as a genre represents the intersection of the imagined fantasies and the earthly machinations of Imperialism. It also posits the existence of History painting (especially Neoclassicism) as a form of reflexive Orientalism.
