Social network sites (SNSs) have been attributed with playing a significant role in the three most recent presidential elections (2008, 2012, and 2016). President Trump's prolific use of Twitter was attributed as being a major factor in his successful bid for the presidency. Analyzing his Twitter feed in terms of the power vested in his language, this paper seeks to explain how Trump was able to navigate and exploit SNSs en route to the Oval Office. Through an exploration of how power is enacted through the language of RealDonaldTrump on Twitter, four factors are tested using both corpus and critical discourse analytic methods to see how exactly Trump manifests his power in social media. Pronoun choice (we versus I), semantic prosody (of Trump, Hillary, and China), stance (using John Du Boise's theory of the Stance Triangle and the pragmatic analysis of Trump's preferred hashtags), and metaphor (using critical metaphor analysis as devised by Jonathan Charteris-Black) were analyzed. Corpus software (AntConc) was used in the determination of semantic prosody and pronoun preference. The results indicate a relationship between Trump's preferred patterns of speech and the seemingly genre-advantageous nature of them.
