Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2016.
Includes bibliographical references
This thesis explores factors that have contributed to the underutilization of psychotherapy services by African Americans from a depth psychological perspective and how these factors can be addressed and overcome. Cultural trauma and cultural complexes that contribute to the underutilization of psychotherapy in the African-American community are discussed. Hermeneutic and heuristic research examines family systems, cultural, and psychoanalytical theories applied to data drawn from autobiographical experiences, existing research, and media. It provides a cultural awareness to clinicians who serve the African-American community about factors that contribute to the underutilization of psychotherapy services in order to help bridge the gap between the mental health field and African-American community.
