To date, studies on connected text reading in persons with aphasia are limited. This study was conducted to characterize oral paragraph reading in persons with aphasia by measuring accuracy, rate, fluency, and comprehension of reading. Nine participants with aphasia and nine neurologically intact, age- and education matched adults participated in this study. The Gray Oral Reading Test- Fifth Edition (GORT-5) was used to elicit the reading measures for both participant groups. Results indicated that control participants performed significantly better than participants with aphasia in terms of accuracy, rate, fluency, and comprehension. Comprehension was weakly associated with accuracy, rate, and fluency for both participants groups, with the exception of there being no association between accuracy and comprehension for control participants. Lastly, text difficulty level significantly predicted rate, fluency, and comprehension for both participant groups, but not accuracy for either participant group. Though results are interpreted with caution due to limitations, the study provides an initial framework for characterizing accuracy, rate, fluency, and comprehension of oral connected text reading in individuals with aphasia.
