In order to reconstruct Tcherepnin's activities in China, many news reports and magazine articles from China, Japan, the United States and Europe were examined. Relevant musical compositions by Tcherepnin and Chinese composers under his influence are analyzed and discussed in light of his theories. The most important resource of this study has been Mme. Ming Tcherepnin, the composer's widow. Many documents, such as the composer's unpublished letters, photos, scrapbooks and diaries were made available to the researcher. The study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter provides a background of modern Chinese musical developments before Tcherepnin's arrival in China, and a brief consideration of the composer's career before his Far East tour. The second chapter deals with Tcherepnin's activities in China during the period of 1934 to 1937. The third chapter discusses the composer's four "Chinese" compositions, which carry significance for both the Chinese and the composer himself. Chapter four considers the continuing influence of Tcherepnin after his departure from China in 1937. The last chapter offers a brief summary, conclusions, and some suggestions for possible further study.

Tcherepnin was the only Western composer to influence the early development of modern Chinese music in a creative way. Although he stayed there only three years, he nonetheless exerted a positive influence on both Chinese society and modern Chinese musical development. Along with many of his other works, Tcherepnin's theories on the pentatonic scales, the five major and minor pentatonic modes, and the various possible chordal constructions provide significant material for music education as it pertains to composition, performance, literature and theory.
