The initial purpose of this study was to construct a pictorial physics test which would measure the degree to which ninth-grade students understand basic physics. It was proposed that the test would be used in Taiwan to assess, through pictorial means, the degree to which a student has attained a nonsyllogistic or intuitive understanding of physics.

The pictorial instrument contained items in a stem picture and three/four choice pictures; one of which was true in relationship to the stem. Using Bloom's Taxonomy, test items were drawn from introductory junior high school physics programs in Taiwan. Five hundred forty ninth-grade subjects made up of 270 males and 270 females living in urban (90 males, 90 females), suburban (90 males, 90 females), and rural (90 males, 90 females) areas were randomly selected for the study. Four student characteristics, IQ, science aptitude, sex, and study area, were selected as independent variables. The dependent variables were the degree of the student's understanding of basic physics which was measured by the pictorial physics test, and the verbal physics test. Results indicated that students performed better on the pictorial physics test than on the verbal physics test in the total sample and subsamples. The higher the student's IQ level or the higher the student's science aptitude level, the better was the performance on the pictorial physics test. Students from urban areas showed better performance on the pictorial physics test than those in suburban or rural areas. However, there was no significant difference between suburban students and rural students. Male students had higher physics achievement scores than did female students. The practical advantages, reliability, and validity of the pictorial physics test indicated that it provided a potentially unique and useful tool to the junior high school physics teacher in Taiwan.
