Scholars have long noticed similarities in vocabulary among the Mongol, Turkic, and Tungus languages, and for many years prevailing opinion ascribed a genetic relationship to these three languages. In recent times it has been demonstrated that many of the correspondences thought to indicate a genetic relationship were in fact the result of loans. The present work examines in detail the correspondences between Mongol and Manchu, which in terms of lexicography is the best represented of the Tungus languages. Using as a base the correspondences in vocabulary set forth in the Sravnitel'nij slovar' tunguso-man'czurskikh jazykov {Comparative Dictionary of Manchu-Tungus} and adding those correspondences proposed by other scholars including myself, I utilize semantic, phonological, and etymological evidence to place each of the 1,266 correspondences into one of eight categories: (1) recent loans of Mongol into Manchu (2) early loans of Mongol into Manchu/Jurchen (3) ancient loans of Mongol into Tungus (4) pre-loan correspondences (5) loans from Manchu into Mongol (6) problematic cases (7) loans from Chinese into both Mongol and Manchu by separate routes (8) dismissable or unfounded correspondences.

520 $a The largest category, recent loans from Mongol into Manchu, comprises 43% of the total and indicates the degree to which Mongol culture influenced Manchu culture in recent times. This period can, on the basis of Buddhist terminology present in Manchu but absent from Ming period Jurchen glosses, be dated from the 16th century onward. Less than 1% of the correspondences can be assigned to the category of Manchu loans into Mongol; these are mostly Ch'ing era court terms.
520 $a Only 4.5% of the correspondences fall into the category of pre-loan material, and such a small number indicates that a genetic explanation for the relationship is most unlikely. However, a number of these correspondences also have a Turkic correspondence, and so cannot be dismissed as mere chance. I suggest that, in addition to the extensive loan contacts between Mongol and Tungus, in particular between Mongol and Manchu, there may have been an earlier areal influence upon the proto-languages which resulted in a number of common correspondences.
