Methods. The subjects of this study included 178 regular school teachers and 217 public special school teachers. The Chinese version of the Short Form Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire was used to investigate the job satisfaction of special and regular school teachers. The Personal Information Form designed by this researcher was used to request public special school teachers to provide the information about sex, age, salary, degree-held, years as a special school teacher, type of special school, teaching level, special teacher social status, teacher-principal relations, and school facilities and services. The data were analyzed by using the t test and multiple regression.

Findings. Public special school teachers' job satisfaction was lower than that of regular school teachers. The collective contribution of the 10 predictor variables was statistically significant in predicting the job satisfaction of public special school teachers. They collectively explained 85% of the variance in job satisfaction. The individual contributions of type of special school, special teacher social status, teacher-principal relations, and school facilities and services were statistically significant in predicting the job satisfaction of public special school teachers.

Conclusions. Possibly due to the fact that most people in Taiwan do not value special education the same as regular education, public special school teachers had lower job satisfaction than regular teachers in this study. Ten variables investigated in this study, as a group, appeared to strongly influence the job satisfaction of teachers in the public special schools. It is an interesting finding that the results of this study seem to support the theory of job satisfaction developed by Herzberg. In other words, Herzberg's theory is able to be generalized to the Chinese setting.
