There were two purposes addressed in this research project. The first was to discover what types of morals have been stressed in children's literature at different age-levels in Taiwan. In order to do so, 179 stories concerning morality for children ages 6-8, 752 stories for children ages 9-10, and 659 stories for children ages 11-12 were selected and the contents were analyzed according to a model designed for this purpose. The second was to investigate the types of presentations of moral traits used in literature that children identified with the most. This second purpose was pursued by means of a questionnaire containing 12 types of presentations, such as the presentations of the direct didactic or the story form, the presentations of human models or animal models and the presentations of psychological or physical punishment, in 12 selected stories. For this, 346 children ages 6-8, 358 children ages 9-10 and 360 children ages 11-12 were chosen to answer the questionnaire.

In the content analysis of children's literature, we found the same kinds of moral traits were expressed in children's literature for the three age groups such as filial piety, courage, studying diligently, and righteousness. Concerning the findings of the empirical investigation, we discovered that the presentations of the story style, the animal model, psychological punishment, physical punishment, psychological reward, adult model and child model were effective in guiding children to identify moral traits. As for the developmental sequence, the presentations of the direct didactic and story styles, the animal and human models, and the presentations of material rewards and psychological rewards showed significant differences among the three age levels.
