The present study investigates the factors that condition the alternation among the three morphological manifestations of an anaphoric participant in Chinese: a full noun, a pronoun, and zero. It is found that the selection of the morphological realizations is conditioned by the structure of higher linguistic strata. The syntactic position of a participant in a clause may partially determine whether a zero anaphor may occur. The semantic status of a participant as human or nonhuman and as referential and/or definite also plays a role in governing its morphological realization. At the discourse level, the selection of anaphoric forms is subject to the speaker's consideration of the addressee's ability to decipher reference, his empathy with the participants of the story, and most importantly, his need to use anaphora as a surface cohesive device to mark the hierarchical structure of the discourse. The different anaphoric forms serve as formal demarcations of the three levels of discourse units: the clause, the topic chain, and the paragraph. Zero functions as an internal tie among clauses which are closely related semantically and form one single topic chain. Pronouns occur where there is a minor break in semantic continuity to mark the beginning of a separate topic chain. Nouns, on the other hand, are used at the beginning of a paragraph, where there is a major transition in the progression of the story line.

Individual variation is observed in the data. However, the existence of such variation does not invalidate the regularities that have been singled out in this study. These regularities represent the common set of principles on which native speakers of Chinese base their anaphoric choices. In cases where these regularities are violated, the use of a deviant form usually reveals the particular author's perception of the events, his organization of the discourse, and his attitude toward the participants of the story, all of which contribute to his personal style.
