Principals are important (DuFour, 2015). When studying factors that have the greatest impact on student learning, principal leadership is second only to the teacher in the classroom (Fullan, 2010; Gill, 2012; Hussin & Abri, 2015; Mendels & Mitgang, 2013; Reardon, 2011; Streshly & Gray, 2008). The role of the principal has changed from that of manager to learning leader. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of the principal as lead learner. A mixed-methods research design was used. Using building level principals and district level administrators as units of analysis, the study investigated the perceptions of principals and their participation in 10 administrative activities centered on data analysis, professional development activities, and mentorship of teachers. The study then compared the perceptions of district level administrators to determine if principals and district level administrators shared the same perceptions of levels of importance for the principal administrative tasks. According to the quantitative research conducted, principal and district level administrators' perceptions of task importance were similar on 6 of the 10 responsibilities and different on 4 of the 10 responsibilities. According to the qualitative research conducted, both principals and district level administrators valued relationship with teachers (mentoring teachers to produce teacher leaders) as the most important task of the modern principal.
