The research presented in this study was motivated by the growing concerns over data privacy and the increasing number of data breaches occurring at many organizations with large amounts of data or Big Data. This study focusses on gaining insight and understanding of key factors that contribute to Big Data security problems at banks. The need for more awareness regarding Big Data security issues at banks is also a driver factor for this research study. Banks represent a major target for cyber-attacks and data breaches because of the high value data that they host. Social security numbers, credit card information are data that could help a cybercriminal steal the identity and money of banks' clients. A qualitative research approach was used to explore the issues surrounding Big Data security at banks. The main theories used in the study included the Protection Motivation Theory, the Compliance Theory, and the Duality of Technology Theory. A series of open-ended interviews were conducted with 9 individuals with experience working on Big Data security at banks. The transcription and analysis of the interviews provided insight into several themes for the four research questions. Research question one on the key challenges to the implementation of an ideal Big Data security solution provided the following themes in order of importance: software, change, employees, and time. Research question two on Big Data security threats and vulnerabilities yielded the following themes: internal users. hackers, malware, physical security. Research question three on enforcement in Big Data security provided the following themes: technology, procedures, policy, regulations and rules. Research question four on Big Data security cost considerations provided the following themes: budget, staffing, management, and culture. Potential uses of the study findings and themes includes using them as bases to create effective Big Data security strategies for organizations and enhancing academic knowledge about potential issues related to Big Data security.
