Over the years, several studies have been conducted to determine the influence of athletic participation on academic achievement of high school seniors. Researchers have been inconclusive in their findings relative to the impact of athletic participation on academic achievement of high schools seniors. As a result, this study was conducted to investigate the influence of athletics on high school seniors who participated in athletics. In this study, grade point averages (GPAs) were the metrics by which the results were measured. Likewise, all of the data were collected by use of an Ex-Post Facto research design. The purpose of the study was twofold: (1) to determine whether there was a relationship between demographics and academic achievement of high school seniors in two school districts and (2) to examine whether there was a relationship between athletic participation, overall GPA, and GPA of Regents exams in each of high school seniors' core content subjects of English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. The population of the study included 430 participants. Results of the study indicated that there was no significant relationship that existed between demographics and academic achievement of high school seniors. It was also determined in the study that athletics have no significant influence on academic achievement of high school seniors. The results of this study are much in alignment with results of similar studies in the extant literature. The study also showed significant difference between students who participated in music versus those students who did not participate in any other type of socialization. Furthermore, it was determined that athletic programs are beneficial to students and should not become casualties of budgets cuts. Finally, recommendations for future research are also included within this study.
