There were 74,100 travel agents in the U.S. in 2014 and that is an expected to decline by 12% before 2024. Consumers have increased their use of online travel sites to book trips and that increased competition has impacted independent travel agencies. Small business is a major contributor to the United States (U.S.) economy, producing 46% of the private non-farm gross domestic product (GDP) in 2008. The problem addressed in this study was that small businesses have a greater than 50% failure and independent travel agents are projected to lose 12% of their workforce due to battling stiff competition from consumers bypassing agents and booking trips direct, online. The purpose of this qualitative narrative case study was to understand the impact strategic planning has on independent travel agencies' financial performance from the small business owners' perspective. The sample included small business owners of three independent travel agencies in a large metropolitan city in a southern state, all of whom had been in business for at least three years. Data were collected using qualitative interviews. Results from the data analyzed was that strategic planning had a positive impact on performance, although all three business owners used informal rather than formal business planning. Recommendations for further research include expanding the sample size and further researching the impact informal business plans have on independent travel agents.
