The purpose of this study is to identify key factors affecting the implementation of intergenerational ministry among Chinese church leaders in the diaspora so as to provide suggestions for future implementation. Intergenerational Ministry (IGM) has received little attention among Chinese churches around the world. This study provides resources support to the implementation of IGM among Chinese churches. Literature Reviews were conducted on: (a) social science literature which provided references on intergenerational relationships in relation to developmental stages including Erikson and Loder, (b) biblical foundation reviewing Scriptures on how the people of God should relate with each other as a faith community, and (c) literature resources available on IGM in English from various educators and scholars. By using Basic Qualitative Research method, twenty-six church leaders of different age groups were interviewed in Asia, namely, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and in North America. These church leaders provided information concerning present situation and their perceptions on generational challenges, as well as the conditions, which they perceived where IGM might be implemented among Chinese churches.

Although there were many factors affecting implementation of IGM mentioned by different authors and from interviewees, the researcher found many were related and might then be grouped together into three major factors. They are namely, first the cultural factor including language, traditions and ethnicity; second, the perception of power and authority, and third, stereotyping.

Suggestions for implementation of IGM among Chinese churches are summarized into six conditions or steps although not necessarily in sequence. They are: turning ethnic society into faith community, turning cultural differences into mosaic beauty, turning productivity into creativity, turning leaders into team-mates, turning needs into love, and finally, turning English resources into Chinese. These moves need to be implemented at this crucial time when many Chinese churches are facing generational challenges almost to the breaking point. Many immigrant Chinese churches are facing the dilemma of bi-literal, tri-lingual, quad-cultural generational issues. IGM serves as vertical link to bind together the age-specific and language- specific ministries in the Church, into a holistic and true family of God, a Body of Christ. The study shows IGM should be used to complement and not to substitute age-specific ministries.
