National educational reforms have raised teacher and school accountability throughout our nation. Because of these reforms, Louisiana teachers and schools are evaluated on accountability measures such as student academic achievement and growth. These reforms force schools to continuously improve teaching and learning through effective support systems aimed at increasing student achievement. Ultimately, school and district administration must measure these systems with more critical eyes as they can directly impact school staffing and financial support.

One such support is Data Teams, a type of professional learning community that allows teachers to work in collaborative teams, improve classroom instruction, assess student achievement, provide tiered student academic interventions, and grow professionally. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which Data Teams with a staffed interventionist have increased student academic achievement in one Louisiana school district's high schools.

This study uses mixed-methods, including descriptive and statistical analyses, to study the relationship between student achievement, the Data Teams process, and academic interventions provided by an interventionist at two Louisiana High Schools that each have Data Teams. It includes a qualitative method analysis of their Data Teams as well as a quantitative analysis of the Data Teams process and student achievement of students receiving academic interventions from the classroom teacher or a staffed interventionist within the Data Teams process.

The findings conclude that academic interventions provided by a staffed interventionist through the Data Teams process correlate to statistically significantly higher academic achievement of students serviced by a Data Team with interventionist; whereas the lack of interventions and implementation of the Data Teams process of the other three Data Teams may have led to less of an impact on student achievement. Furthermore, the researcher discovered two themes or patterns that were consistent throughout the analysis of data: (a) the Data Teams process protocol is critical to its success and (b) Tier 3 academic interventions are impactful. These findings may assist school administrators in making appropriate decisions regarding teacher staffing and whether having a staffed interventionist is worth the cost it entails. Additionally, it may provide evidence that academic support systems such as Data Teams and interventions can assist in raising student achievement. Future research should include studies on Data Teams at the high school level, the implementation of the three levels of RTI within the Data Teams process, and the impact of school leadership in the implementation of the Data Teams process.
