Four questions guided this study: (1) What are the visual and written stories created by the children of the military? (2) What can be learned from the visual stories of the children of the military? (3) What are the implications learned from these narratives for educators? (4) What are the implications learned from these narratives for parents? The Military Child Education Coalition had six hundred works of art created by children in grades three through five. From those works, I randomly selected one hundred and fifty pieces to use in this research study.

The analysis of the data provided reveal significant findings: (1) The visual and written stories speak of the experiences these children have had because their parent(s) are serving in the Armed Forces, (2) These works are evidence to the importance of educators providing an opportunity for military children to voice their narratives, (3) Parents need to understand that the academic and often emotional struggles of their children are not necessarily "their fault," but rather results of the military lifestyle. Their children need a way to voice their feelings about being a child of the military.

The lifestyle requirements of the military have real and lasting effects on its children. Until now, the impact of the military lifestyle on its elementary dependents was not fully known. Themes of Deployment, Sacrifice, and Transition identify fundamental issues that have significance nationwide, state to state, and school district to school district. What happens to our military children affects all Americans. The issues identified in the stories told by children of the military impact our national security.
