Abstract: Young people are particularly and easily induced by the gender norms portrayed in television, film, music and music videos. Many women and young girls have a tendency to idolize celebrities within the music industry who do not represent human agency. Women on FIRE: Revamped Gender Codes in Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" Song & Video will deconstruct Alicia Keys' 2012 title track "Girl on Fire" and how this media object supports Keys as an emissary for women and redefines American female gender codes. The "Girl on Fire" lyrics signifies a multifaceted contemporary American women, a woman who is a nurturer and businesswoman, which is an image appealing to a multi generational audience who gaze upon Keys juxtaposing American gender codes by espousing human agency through her support of feminism, wearing no makeup in public and by dressing non-promiscuously. Women on FIRE: Revamped Gender Codes in Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" Song & Video will acknowledge the distinction between Keys and other female music artists such as Beyonce and Rihanna. Women on FIRE: Revamped Gender Codes in Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" Song & Video will compare Rihanna's 2012 lyrics Pour It Up and Beyonce's 2013 lyrics Drunk In Love to Alicia Keys Girl on Fire lyrics. These celebrities follow the path of the music industry rather than their own sense of agency.
