This mixed-methods continuous non-experimental study was designed to discover the long-term effects of studying abroad on one's intercultural effectiveness, career, and personal life. Qualitative data for this study was gathered by interviewing 28 members of a cohort who studied abroad in Vienna, Austria seven years prior. Quantitative data was analyzed by using the Global Perspectives Inventory. Scores from these 28 individuals were compared to those of 34 individuals who attended the same private, southern university but did not study abroad. The results of this study indicated that studying abroad increases one's intercultural effectiveness. Common themes that emerged regarding the effect of studying abroad on one's career and personal life were also explored.
