A study of the literature indicates that moral education has changed in the United States and points to several factors that have influenced the changes. Factors include: (1) The shift in population from a small, homogeneous populace that was largely Protestant and perceived moral education as being based on the Bible and religious instruction to a diverse, larger population with varied societal and cultural mores, (2) Supreme Court decisions that ruled religious instruction by sectarian groups, compulsory prayer, and Bible reading conducted as a religious exercise to be unconstitutional in the public school classroom, (3) The impact of educational theorists who have redefined moral education's purpose and suggested that the process of valuing rather than the inculcation of specific values be taught. Numerous selections of old and contemporary textbooks are included to provide a comparison of the changes in content and structure in American educational literature.

The study concludes that the current dissatisfaction with curriculum and textbooks by that segment of the population that favors moral education in the traditional sense is one of the contributing factors in the growth of private schools and compares this to the exodus of the Catholic population from public schools in the early 1900's to form parochial schools in protest of the textbooks and moral education of that day. It also suggests that the growing censorship attempts by parent-led groups who are dissatisfied with contemporary textbooks may force publishers toward a more conservative product.
