This study compares the tonal inventory of Beijing Mandarin and Taipei Mandarin. Acoustic analysis of speech from six Beijing and 24 Taipei subjects reveals no significant differences between Beijing and Taipei production of tones 1 and 4. However, the results show that tones 2 and 3 are produced with different contours. For Beijing speakers, tone 2 rises; for Taipei speakers, tone 2 falls before rising. For Beijing speakers, tone 3 is either low falling-rising or low level; for Taipei speakers, tone 3 is typically low level or low falling. Subsequent sociolinguistic analysis of the Taipei data reveals that gender is the sole contributor to the observed tonal variation, and only for tone 2: females tend to use more "standard" contours. It is concluded that these two varieties of Mandarin are tonally distinct, but only to a limited degree.
