The Problem. The research revealed that parents and teachers are experiencing concern with increasing child discipline problems. The Sample. The population consisted of pre-school through 6th grade students showing maladaptive behavior as rated by parents and teachers. Student data was collected only if both a parent and the student's teacher attended a study group. The number of students rated by parents and teachers in the experimental group was 168 in 1975-76, and 157 in 1976-77. The number of students rated by teachers in the control group was 186 in 1975-76, and 155 in 1976-77.

The Procedure. Parents and teachers attended Adlerian study groups to learn new principles and methods for interacting with children to effect change in maladaptive behavior. Student behavior was rated by both parent and teacher in the experimental group pre and post their participation in a twelve-week parent study group or teacher study group. The teacher study groups were led by the elementary school counselor. The parent study groups were led by paraprofessional parents and volunteer parents.

Teachers rated students in the control group pre and post the twelve-week study group period. These teachers did not attend a study group.

Statistical Treatment and Results. The data from the experimental and control groups were evaluated by the "t" test of significance for independent samples which indicated student behavior change significant at the .01 level in 1975-76, and at the .001 level in 1976-77 for students in the experimental groups.

Mean ratings contrasting parent and teacher ratings of students in 1976-77 showed that both were very similar in their ratings of improved behavior on the post-test. Parents rated their children post only in 1975-76. Ninety-eight percent reported improved behavior in their children.

Parent and teacher cognitive understanding of the study group concepts was measured. Parents achieved a mean percent score of 89, and teachers achieved a mean percent score of 95 on the post-test in 1975-76. In 1976-77, Ninety percent of the parents achieved a score of 80% or higher on the post-test.

The hypotheses were supported in the affirmative. When both teacher and parent complete Adlerian study groups, child maladaptive behavior, as perceived by these significant adults, did change in a positive direction in the home and in the school. Parents and teachers did cognitively learn the concepts studied in the Adlerian study groups.
