Classroom and school discipline have been and continue to be a concern shared by teachers, administrators, and the public. Despite the plethora of discipline materials available to teachers, many still feel inadequate in their classroom management skills.

This study analyzed twenty-six models of classroom/school discipline in terms of theory, strengths and weaknesses, and empirical support. From the literature review, it was determined that no one discipline program was judged to be the most effective in all situations. Similarly, no single in-service program was proven to be superior. Further, the literature suggested that discipline training should be addressed at the pre-service level.

The purpose of this study was to determine the percentage of teacher training programs offering specific courses in classroom discipline to their pre-service teachers. To achieve this goal, a survey was developed and mailed to all colleges and universities accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Four hundred sixty-seven institutions were sent questionnaires. At least one response was received from 57% of the schools.

Results indicated that 51% of colleges and universities offered a specific discipline course at the undergraduate level. However, only 43% of all pre-service students were required to take such a course. Specific discipline courses were compared to courses covering aspects of discipline in regard to topics (e.g., history of discipline) and programs (e.g., Assertive Discipline) taught, as well as books/texts used. Methods (e.g., audio-visual aids) employed by professors to teach classroom discipline were also examined.

Implications of this study supported those in the literature. The major limitations included those disadvantages inherent in survey research. Modifications in the teacher training curricula and recommendations for future research were delineated.
