The goal of this study was to examine the effects of immigration laws and enforcement on the local economy of Maryvale, in Phoenix, Arizona, a community that is composed of primarily Hispanic residents. Conditions related to the laws and community economics include lowered tax base, disruption in retail business, greater unemployment, and less discretionary income. While there are many studies addressing the immigration issue there is less research on how the strict enforcement of immigration law affects the local businesses and economy. This qualitative case study was an on-site, real time view of the phenomenon with a critical lens due to assertions that the constitutional rights of community members had been abused. Study participants were community stakeholders, residents, business owners/managers, and police officers enforcing immigration laws in the study area. Data was collected using online anonymous surveys until data saturation was reached. Data obtained from survey interviews were coded and placed in thematic sections for analysis. Themes identified were deportation, profiling, and economic distress. A grounded theory approach was used to analyze the data. Results conclude that immigration laws and enforcement have a negative economic consequence in the study community. This study adds empirical research on the economic impact of federal and state-sponsored immigration laws and the local enforcement of these laws on stakeholders of local communities. Further research is needed to provide quantifiable economic measures of conditions attributed to immigration legislation and enforcement in communities of primarily immigrant populations and how the aggregate amounts affect the statewide and national gross domestic product.
