In the present study, we have examined short-term memory functions on phonological tasks, auditory tasks, and visual tasks within multilinguals and monolinguals. All participants spoke English as their native language and there was no discrimination against the additional languages spoken by the multilinguals. A subjective measure was given to the participants in order to determine which group, monolingual group or multilingual group, the participants would be included in. The experiment consisted of six memory tasks: phonological recall and recognition, auditory recall and recognition, and visual recall and recognition. Results revealed multilinguals outperformed monolinguals on both of the phonological memory tasks. Both groups performed equally well on the auditory and visual tasks. The results of the phonological memory tasks speak to the bilingual advantage multilinguals possess for cognitive skills. The results of the auditory and visual tasks suggest further research modifying how the tasks are administered to the participants.
