The purpose of this study was to develop and conduct a field trial of a supplemental geometry unit intended to raise van Hiele thinking levels of a group of eighth grade students. All 23 participants in the study tested above grade level in mathematics and were taught by the investigator in the same eighth grade class. The van Hiele thinking levels serve as standard classifications of students' thought patterns in geometry. The topics of shapes and area were presented in an informal manner using concrete manipulatives. The students participated in discussions with each other and discovered geometric relationships through hands-on activities.

The goal of this study was to raise the students' skills in reasoning and critical thinking by having them become more adept at using higher order thinking skills. To accomplish this task, the levels of geometric thinking that the eighth grade students of this study possessed before studying the unit were determined through testing based on the van Hiele Geometric Model. A unit of study in geometry was developed according to students' needs as revealed through a pre-unit test, opinion survey, and clinical interview. An investigation of the mathematics curriculum, textbooks, and teaching methods of their past teachers was also conducted. At the close of the geometry unit, the students were evaluated again through a post-unit test, opinion survey, and clinical interview. The results indicated that the students heightened their geometry thinking levels and also enjoyed the subject more. The students' degree of acquisition of specific van Hiele thinking levels was monitored, and the increments of higher order thinking skills were recorded.

This study can be utilized by teachers. It explains how to determine a student's thinking level in geometry, and it provides lessons that build upon one another to assist in teaching students to think deductively. If students are guided to use their thinking skills more often, they may welcome the challenges of analytical thinking.
