The objective of this study was to research freshmen students' level of career self-efficacy as it relates to predicting retention. College graduates have been underemployed since 2001. In addition, they are working in retail, hospitality, or some other skilled-level job that does not require a college degree. The prevalence of underemployment is supported by research that shows the necessity of obtaining a college degree is on the decline according to societal beliefs. In this study, the researcher used the Career and Self-Efficacy Scale to measure the effect of career self-efficacy on the retention rate of freshmen students at an urban university. The independent variables in this study are the career self-efficacy factors: student self-appraisal, occupational information, student goal selection, student planning, and student problem solving. The dependent variable in this study was retention. A regression model was used to test the data. The sample consisted of students from a historically Black university in a Metropolitan area of a Southwestern state. The University of Vermont Career and Experience Hub transformational model were used to operationalize career self-efficacy.
