This research explores how better understanding of perception in psychology helped abstract art become a trend at the beginning of the 20th century. A general discussion of how three time periods: De Stijl, Bauhaus and Swiss International Style, with the new knowledge in psychology, were able to create simplified art that stripped off unnecessary decorations and focused on a simple, clear message, is the focus. Histories, influences and general beliefs of these time periods were reviewed as these characteristics help create an understanding of why the artworks exhibit unique features. A closer look at how prominent artists from De Stijl, Bauhaus and Swiss International Style were able to influence the characteristics of the time periods with personal beliefs were also explored. The conclusion of this research is the creation of a series of graphic design posters with detailed explanations of how their visual styles were inspired by the De Stijl, Bauhaus and Swiss International Style principles.
