Body and Performance Art: The Development of a Market is a research study of the development of performance in the art world. Body and performance art's extensive history is recognized as a form of taboo in western culture. The movement centers on the exploration and experimentation on new art styles breaking traditional norms. Over the last several decades, the movement became increasingly popular amongst the audiences. Although it generates fame, it struggles to establish a stronger market. The thesis will explore the historical precedence of the performance market analyzing the markets of four female artists in the current art world: Marina Abramovic, ORLAN, Janine Antoni, and Li Xinmo. Abramovic and ORLAN represent the older generation of the Conceptual art movement of the 1970s. Antoni and Li Xinmo represent the new generation of the Contemporary art movement, today. The four case studies will present the pinnacle performance pieces of their careers and research the artists' highs and lows in the art market. The goal of the analysis is to understand the function of performance and body art in the international art market and its establishment in the future.
