The scarcity of racial minority professors in U.S. business schools has been a topic of much discussion in corporate and academic circles for many years. What is less understood is what racial minority faculty and doctoral candidates at U.S. business schools perceive as the primary reasons for underrepresentation and barriers to their success in business schools. A variety of studies have indicated that there exists a difference in perceptions between racial minority faculty and business school administrators as to the reasons for the underrepresentation of racial minority faculty at U.S. business schools. This qualitative study will employ critical race theory to examine the reasons for faculty underrepresentation. The purpose of this study was to critically examine the perceptions of racial minority business faculty, including graduate students, at accredited, doctoral-granting, U.S. business schools regarding faculty underrepresentation of African American, Hispanic American, and Native American groups at such schools. Interviews were conducted with 24 current and prospective racial minority faculty in the business school sector.

The main findings of this study indicated that racial and ethnic minority business faculty perceived such faculty to be underrepresented on the faculties of U.S. business schools. Study findings also indicate that there is a divergence of perspectives between business school administrators and racial and ethnic minority business faculty on the reasons for, and solutions to, faculty underrepresentation at U.S. business schools. The findings of this research conclude that racial and ethnic minority faculty are underrepresented at U.S. business schools and that a comprehensive, systematic strategy is needed to address faculty diversity at all U.S. business schools, to include action plans to increase the pipeline of racial and ethnic minority business students, diversify faculty search committee membership, include faculty diversity efforts as a part of administrators' job evaluations, and provide mentors for existing and aspiring racial and ethnic minority faculty. In the absence of a comprehensive strategy, the number of racial and ethnic minority faculty at U.S. business schools will remain low and stagnant.
