A child's chronic illness affects the child psychologically, emotionally, behaviorally, and psychosocially, as well as the entire family, including the well siblings. The intention of this study was to examine how a child's chronic illness can influence the long-lasting relationship between the well sibling and ill child, through the perspective of the parents and well siblings. Data was collected through semi-structured qualitative interviews with four families with a child with a chronic illness. A total of three parents and four well siblings participated in this study. Results of this study indicated that the overall relationship between the well sibling and ill child was strongly and positively impacted by the chronic illness, despite the challenges the siblings experienced together. Well siblings had to take on unexpected roles and new responsibilities in order for the families to provide optimal care and support to the ill child. This unanticipated change profoundly contributed to the strong growth of the relationship and the process of growing up in a family with chronic illness helped the well siblings gain a positive perspective on life. This study brings an awareness of the importance of allowing well siblings to be involved in the care and education of ill child's chronic illness to maintain a cohesive and robust long-lasting relationship.
