A mixed methods research design was selected to investigate how lighting changes in a special education classroom impacted academic achievements, behaviors, and perceptions of children with autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The population for the study consisted of five middle school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and specific learning disabilities. During the baseline phases of this single subject research, fluorescent lighting was used in the classroom. Throughout the treatment phases, the classroom was lit with floor lamps with incandescent light bulbs. Using a Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, the researcher found a statistical difference among the subjects. Using a psychological phenomenology approach, the researcher found student perceptions were affected by lighting changes in the special education classroom.
