Mentor texts are picture books that can be used to show examples of good writing during writer's workshop. In this study, mentor texts were used to motivate and improve persuasive writing in a third grade language arts resource room. Three methods of data collection were used during this study: pre and post writing assessments, anecdotal notes, and student interviews. At the conclusion of this study, the writing assessment rubric revealed that students improved and became more confident in their persuasive writing, especially in the area of supporting opinion and word choice. In addition, students commented that they enjoyed using mentor texts while writing and would like to continue to use them for future writing lessons. Therefore, using mentor texts in a resource room to teach persuasive writing may have been one factor that motivated students to improve their writing.
