Includes bibliographical references
The focus of this qualitative study is to understand how eight Brazilian female doctoral students in STEM who were awarded full scholarship to the Science without Borders program navigated their transition and adaptation to American higher education. Findings from this study show that challenges faced by female doctoral students in STEM require special attention and support from institutions of higher education. There is a need for Brazilian institutions of higher education to implement their linguistic policy to better prepare STEM students. By including female doctoral students in practical knowledge opportunities in the department and creating spaces for discussions about the issues around their adaptation, institutions contribute to the women's sense of belonging, which improves student performance during the doctoral program.
