The financial and competitive challenges facing higher educational institutions have created a dire need for universities and colleges to evaluate the value of the different departments within their institutions. Athletic administrators in higher education are committed to providing adequate opportunities for students, coaches, and staff to intentionally develop their leadership skills. In the midst of reviewing this university mission statements and strategic plans to align all programs carefully, the assessment of a program's value is crucial. These general issues make this study surrounding leadership development of student-athletes a timely and worthwhile pursuit. The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of the impact of athletic participation on leadership development in student-athletes at a small, private university through a qualitative analysis of ten student-athletes interviewed in 2017. The findings revealed several emergent themes within the students' leadership development. These themes included: leading by example, interpersonal communication, both verbally and nonverbally, and time management skills. The findings of this study contribute to the growing body of research on leadership development of student-athletes that participate in NCAA athletic programs. The results also indicated that more resources are necessary to assist athletic programs to deliver intentional quality leadership development initiatives for their student-athletes. Lastly, the findings suggested athletics are beneficial to the current and future institutional stakeholders, because of the strategic alignment with the university mission and vision.
